Too Much Stuff

I've found this video on the Internet last year and it helped me understand why the system of production of most of the products we consume is in crisis. Let's watch it again and reflect upon the ideas that are mentioned in it!

The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

Key words that may help you understand the video:
stuff = things
trash = garbage / rubbish
trashing the planet = polluting / contaminating the plantet

. Do you like this video?
. Why does the woman say that this system of production is in crisis?
. What are the stages mentioned in the video?
. What does externalizing the cost mean?
. Why do people keep on buying stuff?
. What other system of production is proposed?
. Do you think it's possible to change this system of production?

  1. Yes, I like this video. This system of production is in crisis because it is a linear system that hasn’t an exit in which influence the societies, economies, cultures an enviroment. The stages are: extraction, production, distribution, consumtion and a dump o a deposit of trash. Eternalizing the costs mean that the cost of a product is very low (in the USA) because the primary materials to do it and its production take place in the third world countries in which the corps pay a low salary to the workers and they are contaminating the enviroment too. The people continue buying stuff because the things are planned to obsolescent, this mean that the things are made for trash. This is because of the mode of the time and the products changes and the old things can not be actualized, so the people send the things to the dump. The woman propose a new system in wich this linear system is changed by a new one in which the resources are re used and the people do not waste resources. I think it is very difficult to change this system but we can change it with the help of the goverment and the laws supporting the new system.

  2. I do like this video, it helps people to know about what's really happening with a lot of things that we didn't realize before.
    She says that because the system that she shows is negative in a lot of aspects for the planet and for the people.
    The stages are: Extraction, Production, Distribution, Consumition and The dump in the landfield.
    Eternalizing the costs means a very low cost caused by the explotation of people and enviroment.
    They keep doing it because the system uses the mass media and internet to make the people think that they need new stuff.
    It's proposed a new system to not waste resources and improve the economy.
    Sincerely I don't think people start doing things to help the enviroment, I mean, not all of them, some will try to help but none the needed number.
